Anti CCP Test

Tracking Body’s Health Status with

Anti-CCP Test

The anti-CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide) is a blood test used to diagnose and assess the severity of rheumatic arthritis (RA); which is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints. The main purpose of this test it to accurately screen for and detect antibodies in the blood that target cyclic citrullinated peptides. Citrullination is the process where the amino acid arginine in the proteins is converted into citrulline. In people with rheumatoid arthritis, this process is very common and plays a role in development of the disease. The test is also highly specific for RA indicating its less probability to be positive for individuals with no RA. It can diagnose rheumatoid arthritis in a very early stage.

Overview of the Key Factors of the Anti-CCP Test:

Importance of Anti-CCP Test:

The anti-CCP test plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of rheumatoid arthritis. It’s highly sensitive nature allows it to detect RA in individuals even before the joint damage occurs. The specificity of this test allows detection and diagnosis of RA and enables differentiation from other arthritis. A positive anti-CCP test is associated with the higher likelihood of severe and aggressive RA. This information helps guide the treatment and enables implementation of accurate treatment approaches.

Procedure:

No special preparation is required before the test.

A trained phlebotomist or nurse will clean the area in the arm from where the blood is to be taken with an antiseptic.

A tourniquet will be tied to the patient’s arm to ensure the veins are clearly visible.

A needle is then inserted into the patient’s vein and blood sample is collected into a specialized tube.

The needle and tourniquet are then removed and a bandage or cotton pad is applied on the site of venipuncture to prevent infection or bleeding.

The tube in which the blood is collected is specially designed for antibody testing and is lined with preservatives to maintain the quality of blood sample.

The tube is then accurately labelled and sent to the laboratory for further testing.

The results are reported in units and taking into consideration patients health history and other factors, the healthcare provider will determine if any further assessment is needed.

Benefits:

       Relatively quick, painless, and reliable

Helps in very early detection of rheumatoid arthritis

High specificity allows differential diagnosis of RA from other types of arthritis

Helps healthcare providers in assessment of the severity and progression of the condition

Helps in determining the accurate course of action

Helpful in monitoring the progression of the disease and the effectiveness of the treatment

Enables implementation of a better quality care to improve patient outcomes

Precautions to be taken for Anti-CCP Test:

Patients must inform their healthcare provider of any medications, supplements, or over-the-counter medications they are taking as some medications can affect the test results. Patients must ensure they stay hydrated before the blood test to make it more comfortable and easy. Patients must wear comfortable clothing and stay relaxed during the test. If the patient has any bleeding disorder, he/she must inform the healthcare provider right away. Patients can also consult their healthcare provider if any specialized precautions are needed to be taken.
